We welcome all women to be a part of United Methodist Women (UMW). If you are already familiar with a UMW from another United Methodist Church, you may find St. Paul’s UMW a bit different from most. Rather than dilute our focus participating in the district meetings and projects, we prefer to concentrate our efforts locally through a variety of home-grown endeavors.
Our two primary projects are the Bazaar/Turkey Dinner in the autumn and the Trash and Treasures Sale in the spring. The Bazaar/Turkey Dinner is a church-wide event wherein all members and attendees of St. Paul are called upon to donate and/or work. This exciting event takes place the first Thursday and Friday of November with the Bazaar beginning on Thursday. On this day, a rustic lunch of cornbread and beans or chili is available for a nominal fee. The Bazaar continues through Friday and culminates with the sumptuous Turkey Dinner on Friday evening. This is a festive time of fellowship within the community of St. Paul that raises funds benefiting any number of missions supported by our church.
We work on Bazaar items two Thursdays each month from January to November, when the Bazaar is held. The first craft day each month is when we have our UMW meeting and eat our bag lunches together in Brashaber Hall. The other workdays are spent working on crafts from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., then we go out to lunch together at one of our local restaurants. Katherine Haseman is chairman for the Bazaar.
The Trash and Treasures rummage sale is held each spring. Members of the UMW organize and price donations from the congregation. We transform Brashaber Hall from a disorganized explosion of cast-offs to an appealing treasure trove of renewable and reusable items. As the saying goes, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure!” The proceeds from this sale support a variety of St. Paul’s ministries and programs as well as our district dues.
Another service of the UMW is to provide funeral dinners for families of our members. The volunteers who lovingly prepare and serve the meals are an integral part of the caring and Christ-centered service the UMW has come to represent.
For additional fellowship and fun, we also host a Christmas party for all of the women of the church as well as a Mother/Child Banquet in the spring. These dinners are filled with delicious meals and rousing games.
We are always happy to welcome any interested woman into our group. Crafty or not, we have a home for you with us. Join us as we serve St. Paul with fun-filled, service-minded projects.
